How to Make Your Battery Last Longer

A battery is always the most important and most expensive component in an e-bike or e-scooter. So naturally, you'd want it to last a long time. We'd like to share some tips with you on how to make it outlast every other component of your ride, whether that's an e-bike, e-scooter, EUC, or something else.

Lithium-ion batteries typically can last for 1000 charge cycles. This means that from empty to full, if you, for instance, charged a 70% battery to full, it would only count as 0.3 charge cycles. It's inevitable that a battery's capacity will gradually decrease with use, but when properly taken care of, it should be a slow process.

Do Not Fully Drain:

Batteries will be permanently damaged if you over-discharge them. While there are multiple protection mechanisms in place, from your battery management system to your scooter or bike's controller, to prevent a battery voltage from getting too low, it will be in better health if you always have 10 - 20% left in the tank. So if you anticipate a ride soon or the next day, always plug it in and fully charge it before heading out.

Do Not Store it Close to Empty:

This is an extension of the previous point. Batteries gradually lose charge when not in use. So if you've just finished your last ride for the year and are ready to put your e-bike or e-scooter away, charge it up and check it once a month to ensure it still has a good amount of energy left. You don't need to plug in the charger, just turn on your scooter or bike to make sure it still turns on; you can also check its battery percentage. Many people recommend fully charging your batteries once a month, but this is not necessary, and keeping your battery always at max charge level isn't good for it. The ideal storage charge level is between 40% - 60%. This is also why all bikes or scooters are shipped at this charge level.

Do Not Freeze:

During the cold winters of Canada, do not leave your battery in an unheated garage or storage unit, and obviously not outside. We see this way too often in the spring when people bring in their e-scooter or e-bike that won't turn on or take a charge. Their battery is dead. So if you have a removable battery, bring it inside for storage. If not, it's best to bring your whole device inside.
